Shepparton marks International Day of People with Disability

The guide is part of the Greater Shepparton Universal Access and Inclusion Plan, which aims to remove barriers for people with reduced mobility.

“The guide is for businesses as well as community groups and organisations that plan and run events,” council’s community director Louise Mitchell said.

“Council’s economic development department collaborated with interested groups to provide a guide that reflected what those groups wanted to know in this space.”

Developed with input from council’s economic development department and feedback from local groups, the guide follows current standards and legislation.

It provides practical advice to create inclusive spaces and events, helping businesses and organisations ensure their services are accessible to as many people as possible.

“Council hopes to make Greater Shepparton a more accessible, inclusive and welcoming place for all,” Ms Mitchell said.

Originally set to launch on Tuesday, December 3, International Day of People with Disability, the event was postponed to Wednesday, December 4 due to inclement weather.

In the lead-up to the launch, several activities celebrated International Day of People with Disability.

On November 25, Gerry’s Well Oiled Machine, a band of neurodiverse and disabled musicians, ran songwriting workshops where participants created and performed their own songs at a concert the following day.

The guide’s launch on December 4, featured performances by GV Connect participants, who shared songs and dances as a preview of their upcoming end-of-year show, which will be attended by family and friends.

Attendees also heard from participants who reflected on their recent experiences at a sporting event, where they swam, ran, walked, and built new friendships.
