With its rich history and expansive natural surrounds, Murchison is a hidden gem that invites visitors to take time out, connect and make memories.
Greater Shepparton City Council nominated Murchison for the 2023 Victorian Tiny Tourism Town award.
This nomination was in recognition of the outstanding community response during the October 2022 flood event and as an aid for flood recovery by supporting the region’s visitor economy.
Not only was Murchison a perfect representative for the awards, but it also made the region extremely proud when it was selected as a finalist.
“Big thank you to all the businesses who were involved,’’ council’s visitor economy team leader Ingrid Thomas said.
“The award is really about them.’’
Top honours in this year’s award went to Aireys Inlet, with Red Hill South winning silver and Jamieson earning bronze.
City of Greater Shepparton Mayor Shane Sali congratulated the winning destinations and acknowledged Murchison’s tourism industry and community members for their amazing efforts in welcoming visitors and promoting their town.
“We loved seeing the spirit of the community flourish after Murchison became a finalist,’’ he said.
“People were excited about the awards, voting, connecting with local businesses and promoting the town to friends and relatives.
“These awards are a great opportunity to showcase the wonderful offerings in the region, including Australia’s largest cut flower operation, Avonlea Flowers, and Murchison Wines, both of which were heavily impacted by the October floods.”
“The history of the Murchison meteorite, Murchison Bakery and rail trail are also notable features.
“We congratulate the winning towns and we are sure they will do a wonderful job representing Victoria at the Australian Top Tourism Town Awards.”
The Tiny Tourism Town awards were assessed based on a two-day, one-night itinerary, encouraging visitors to relax, unwind and immerse themselves in the rich history and natural surroundings that Murchison offers.
The full itinerary could be found on the Shepparton and Goulburn Valley website, along with various other experiences that visitors and locals could enjoy in the region.
