Everyone south of us must be so jealous, especially now that they are in another phase of Covid-19 rules. There was talk of more regional changes and border closure, so we packed a picnic, our warm coats and walking shoes, just in case, and set off while we could to enjoy another day out.
(Please note this was written before the reintroduction of stage three and stage four restrictions across the state)
Day Trips:Cycling Benalla
We headed for Avenel with a plan in mind.
First we had coffee at Harvest Home, which has been done up without killing its old charm.
Another couple had arrived before us and were enjoying their coffee in front of the fire playing chess. Well done them.
As we left, others were arriving for lunch.
Then we went to Fowles Winery to pick up our pre-ordered frozen packages of seven meals for two people.
Friends had raved about them during the earlier shutdown period.
They are all cooked by the chef.
Business done we set off home via the Upton Rd out of Avenel.
Day Trips: A visit to the silos
We were so pleased that we chose this route.
The countryside and great distance views were gorgeous, then again everything looks gorgeous on a sunny day.
About 5 km out of Avenel we passed the maze, which was closed, but if you phone Jane (0409 179 438) she might accept a family booking.
Her original maze suffered in the millennium drought, so she replanted using agapanthus.
Day Trips: Keeping the kids entertained without screens
Cleverly, she designed it so that you execute the maze following clues based on Ned Kelly.
It is a maze for adults as well as children.
We had our picnic at the top of a hill looking into the distance at rocky granite and basalt country.
It always amazes us how different the countryside can be within a short distance from home.
Day Trips: Albury to Chiltern and beyond
The road is windy and in parts gravel, so we didn't hurry.
There was plenty to see including cherry orchards, sheep, alpacas, hillsides of grapes and lots of brown free-range chooks.
Eventually we arrived at a t-intersection and had to decide whether to go down the hill towards Longwood or turn right and head for Ruffy.
We chose to go to Ruffy.
Sadly the Ruffy Produce Store is not operating as it used to, it now only takes special event and group bookings.
However, the Odd Jug nearby will make a Devonshire tea to have in its garden if you phone and book first on 5790 4240.
Eventually we arrived home and had Fowles soup for dinner. Another great day trip.
