A Rotary spokesperson said that after joining in 1996, Bill soon became known as a quiet achiever, never looking for praise and always willing to help family, friends, neighbours and the wider community whenever required.
“He has been involved in many community events over the years,” the spokesperson said.
“In the early 1970s Bill became a blood donor and has donated approximately 140 times so far.

“In 1986 he joined the school council at Benalla West Primary where his daughters attended.
“During that time Bill and his family hosted a Japanese teacher, Junko, for six months and to this day the family still remain in contact with him.
“Bill attended numerous working bees at the school and far preferred those to attending meetings.
“As a keen tennis player he became a member of the Benalla Lawn Tennis Club and was on its committee during the 1990s.

“He took part in many working bees there, and also helped out with the junior tennis of a Saturday morning for many years.
“Bill was on the art and craft committee of the Rotary Club for five years and helped organise its show, which was a big fundraiser.
“An enormous amount of organisation was needed prior to that event to ensure success.
“He has been for many years, and still is, on the catering committee for Rotary’s Winton race involvement.

“He has the ability to see what needs doing and quietly goes about ensuring everything is running smoothly.
“Bill is, and has been, a steward at the Benalla Uniting Church for many years, and has recently been elected as congregational member on the Church Council.
“It was wonderful that Bill’s wife Lois, his daughters Kerry Mundy and Megan Coppolino, and mother-in law Nancy Burgess could attend the presentation evening.”
