The $210 million Safer Local Roads and Streets Program has seen up to $2 million allocated to all 79 councils in the state to help them identify and deliver road works.
Roads and Road Safety Minister Melissa Horne announced works had begun elsewhere in the state on Tuesday, October 29, with assessments under way locally.
“Working alongside Victoria’s councils, we’re delivering important upgrades on local roads today, so our communities are safer into the future,” Ms Horne said.
Gannawarra Shire Council acting chief executive Amanda Wilson thanked the state government for funding through the program for council-managed roads.
“Council is assessing which road safety improvement projects will benefit from this funding, with more information to be announced when we begin engaging with residents in the coming months,” Ms Wilson said.
Campaspe Shire Council was unable to provide details on works funded by the Safer Local Roads and Streets Program.
The council endorsed two grant applications for a similar program at a meeting in August for upgrades on Davis Rd, Patho, and Two Tree Rd, Carag Carag.
Projects funded under the Safer Local Roads and Streets Program include new raised crossings, upgrades to kerbs, intersections, roundabouts and pedestrian islands.
The program will run until June 30, 2027, and is backed by the government’s 2030 Road Safety Strategy targets, which aim to ultimately achieve zero road trauma by 2050.
Councils own and operate 87 per cent of Victoria’s roads and about 40 per cent of road trauma occurs on municipal roads each year.
