Benalla already has a lobby group, Better Benalla Rail, which objects to current ARTC plans.
However, with ARTC and BBR unable to agree a mutually acceptable plan to move forwards ARTC is looking to create a separate group to assist it in meeting its goals.
ARTC believes establishing an independent working group will enable a community focused solution for the station balanced with the scope and budget of the project.

ARTC Victoria projects general manager Ed Walker is inviting community members to take part in order to develop a formal set of requirements from the community as input into the final Inland Rail Design.
“We know there is a passionate community in Benalla who see the works to be delivered by the Inland Rail project as an opportunity to revitalise the station precinct,” Mr Walker said.
“As with all major infrastructure projects, establishing a working group provides the best opportunity to work with a broad cross-section of the community, understand local needs and ensure what we deliver fits with the long-term vision for the station precinct.
“We understand that with important upgrades to local infrastructure like this, we will need to balance the community wish list with key facets of the overall project.

“We invite people of all ages and backgrounds with a good understanding of Benalla to apply to represent the views of the community and can act as a link between the project and locals.
“Better Benalla Rail are great advocates for the Benalla community and (we) look forward to having their input in the working group, alongside representatives of other community groups.”
Benalla Rural City Council has been working with ARTC to develop a range of requirements for the working group.
Benalla Mayor Danny Claridge said the Inland Rail Project was important for Benalla and meaningful community engagement is critical.

“We’re pleased the ARTC has been receptive to undertaking further engagement and communication with the community, and we encourage a broad range of community members to consider applying to represent Benalla as part of this more structured consultation and engagement process,” Cr Claridge said.
Construction of the station precinct is due to start in late 2023 allowing further consultation to meet the needs of the community in the long-term.
Expressions of interest opened on Wednesday, June 10, and close on Thursday, June 25.
