Benalla bridge flood damage impacts water main

Flood damage to the Link Island pedestrian bridge deck in Benalla has impacted a critical water main that supplies the local community.

The bridge deck, damaged during a flood event, has sustained further structural damage, which has compromised the water main located beneath the footway.

John Day, general manager environment, systems and operations, said North East Water is prioritising the installation of a new section of the water main.

“The new main will be installed beneath the creek bed using a boring technique, ensuring it remains more resilient and reliable during future flood events”, Mr Day said.

“Work has now commenced, and construction is expected to be completed before Christmas.”

Once the new pipe is in operation, the bridge deck can be removed by Benalla Rural City Council, and North East Water can proceed with removing the old water main from the site.

Mr Day said this will allow council to reinstate or replace the pedestrian bridge.

“North East Water appreciates the community’s patience and understanding as we complete this important infrastructure work,” he said.

“We are committed to ensuring the reliability of Benalla’s water supply and minimising future disruptions caused by natural events.”
