Surgeon Simon Permezel is embarking on the next chapter of his life — retirement.
A Benalla Health spokesperson said while Simon was stepping back from surgery, he would continue to share his expertise through consultations for a few more years.
“Simon first arrived in our region in June 1987, consulting in Shepparton at a time when public surgical options were limited,” the spokesperson said.
“The landscape began to change in 2007, when a small number of public cases were performed at Shepparton Private Hospital.
“However, the situation quickly became unmanageable, leading to a waiting list that stretched to three years.
“In 2011, during a pivotal meeting with the regional health director, it was proposed that public cases from Shepparton could be performed in Benalla.
“This marked the beginning of a transformative journey for our community.”
Simon joined Benalla Health more than a decade ago — 12 years, to be precise.
Over the years, his team grew to five, then two more were added, and they were known casually as the ‘magnificent seven’.
Simon said he’d miss his colleagues.
“What I have cherished most about working here has been the friendly and efficient staff, along with the exceptional care and respect we provide to our patients,” he said.
“One of my proudest achievements has been introducing a diverse array of music during our operating sessions, enriching the experience for both staff and patients, and forging lifelong friendships along the way.”
Nurse Unit manager Kristen Cheetham said Simon would be missed.
“We loved listening to your playlists while operating and hearing your stories,” she said.
“We felt as though we knew your family — your parents, your wife, Ruth, your sons, Toby and Ollie, their partners, Parisse and Amy, and your grandkids, Daisey, Rosey and Banjo— intimately, even if we hadn’t met them all.
“Your warmth and openness made us feel connected.
“You have been a wonderful teacher, not just to your registrars, but to all of us.
“You were always willing to share your knowledge and insights without hesitation. As you step into retirement, we wish you all the best.
“May you enjoy many more adventures with Ruth and precious moments with your children and grandchildren.
“As we say goodbye to Simon, we celebrate not just his remarkable career but also the profound impact he has had on our community and the lives he has touched.
“We wish him a fulfilling retirement filled with joy, travel and cherished family time.
“Thank you, Simon, for your dedication and for being an integral part of our journey. You will be greatly missed.”
