The event created a lot of thoughtful discussions on the way people think about palliative care.
The film highlighted the diversity of palliative care experiences, especially as the practice is driven by personal wishes and quality of life.
The people filmed advocate being in every moment and living the life we please until the very end.
The film explored dying at home, dementia, spiritual and aged care, and the importance of access to palliative care.
A major point was the benefit of taking action early; for example, open conversations with loved ones and attending to end-of-life wishes.
Early actions and written plans reduce healthcare costs and unwanted medical interventions. Also, people receiving early palliative care support live longer.
A Benalla Health spokesperson said overall, it was an enjoyable afternoon with a wonderful afternoon tea and support provided by its community and hospital volunteers Liz, Rae, Gerry, Kate, Graham and Julia.
“Community connections were made between attendees and our palliative care team, Pauline, April and Catherine, and we look forward to future interactions,” the spokesperson said.
The palliative care team aims for everyone to have access to a good life, and to have their wishes at the forefront for others. The team wants to help you (or your loved one) live well and have quality end-of-life care by making sure:
- You feel supported and inspired by your ‘live life well’ plans and final wishes
- Your final wishes and needs are honoured by carers and community services
- ‘End-of-life planning’ talks happen with the people who matter to you.
