A Benalla Historical Society Spokesperson said this had given it time to assess its collections, cull where deemed necessary, and plan for an upgrade and improvement of the display area within the museum.
“A firm of consultants was employed to provide advice on the complete refurbishment of the galleries with an emphasis on the story of the Kelly gang, general Benalla history, and the society’s outstanding costume collection,” the spokesperson said.
An application for funding was made in February, 2022, to the Australian Museums and Art Galleries Association for funding through its Regional Collections Access Program.
“Last week the society was delighted to be told that it had been granted a little over $201,000 — nearly half the entire budget for the proposed work,” the spokesperson said.
“While awaiting the result of this application (we have) been very busy.
“With the generous assistance of D&R Henderson there is now a new chipboard floor in the old Mechanics’ Institute building.
“This has been sealed with the assistance of a generous donation by Terry Mack at Paynes Paints.
“Two other small grants have been received and these have funded the purchase of two new computers, and a set of shelves.
“With the assistance of Rotarians, much material has been moved to the new storage area and it is anticipated that all shelving racks and other heavy items will be in place very soon.
“Only then will the collection be able to be rehoused in its new storeroom and be ready to go on display once the rest of the building works are complete.”
