Susan Campbell has been inducted into the National Landcare Legends Honour Roll for her conservation work.
Mrs Campbell worked as a landscape architect with the Victorian Ministry of Housing in the 1960s and with the Albury-Wodonga Development Corporation from 1972 to 1990.
During her time with the corporation, she managed the planting of 50,000 trees and shrubs, set up a nursery and helped form several Landcare groups in north-east Victoria, extending the corporation’s reach.
Recognition of her dedication, particularly with Landcare and primary production, has seen Mrs Campbell receive multiple awards, including the North East Regional Landcare Service Award for 25 years of service and acknowledgement in the Landcare Hero Honour Roll 2014.
Mrs Campbell said she had no idea that Pam Robinson nominated her, but it was a pleasant surprise.
“I was taken aback, I just do what I need to do,” she said.
“It was very nice of her to do that.”
Mrs Campbell was awarded an OAM for conservation and environment services in 2015.
She is also known in the conservation community for her involvement with the early establishment of the Springhurst Byawatha Hills Landcare Group, one of the first in Victoria.
Mrs Campbell praised Landcare’s work and said it had much to be commended for.
“The Australian landscape has changed dramatically for the better over the last 50 years or so because of the work that Landcare does,” she said.
“The land is much better, there’s more birds and native animals around.
“It’s also brought a lot of people together, so it’s a great community thing as well.”
