Benalla Rural City Council is lighting up the lake

State Member for Northern Victoria Jaclyn Symes visited the lake precinct earlier this month to inspect new LED path lighting installed under the Creating Safer Places fund, from which Benalla received $286,000.

“This continues the work we have already undertaken to light sections of the Benalla Lake Walk at the splash park and Jaycee Island. The Lighting the Lake project is part of council’s commitment to creating a safer Benalla Rural City for everyone to enjoy,” Mayor Bernie Hearn said.

BRCC will be seeking community input later in the year on how to improve the library and skate park precinct, where new colour-changing external lighting will be installed as part of the lighting project. The lighting will light up the library façade on days of significance and community events.

Further public art will also be installed in the car park under the library.

Community input on perceptions of safety in public places will also be sought as part of the project.

Lighting the Lake is expected to be completed by July 2023.

Funding for the project forms part of the Victorian Government’s Department of Justice and Community Safety’s Building Safer Communities program. This program is designed to reduce antisocial behaviour such as vandalism.
