Volunteers from Benalla, Chiltern, Rutherglen, Wangaratta and Yarrawonga were given the chance to explore the world of aviation and to familiarise themselves with safety aspects of various aircraft and hot air balloons on May 14.
Presentations were delivered by industry experts Terry Cubley and John Wharington of The Gliding Club of Victoria, Steve Hobby of North East Aviation and Paul Gibbs of Goldrush Ballooning.
Volunteers then explored the relevant hazards of a powered aircraft, a self-launching glider, a standard glider and a hot air balloon, which they may encounter in the event of an aviation emergency.
With the skies abuzz with hot air balloons preparing for the FAI World Championships, this training opportunity was delivered at the perfect time.
Benalla SES unit controller Ailsa McMillan said it allowed members to brush up on their skills and develop the necessary knowledge required for such a rescue, outside a real-life emergency.
“Cluster training gives our members a chance to work with others from our surrounding units to prepare us should we require each other’s assistance,” Ms McMillan said.
“It builds networks and rapport vital to get the job done safely and proficiently.
“Our local aviation operators strongly supported this event and I really appreciate all of them volunteering to assist in the planning of the evening and presenting their knowledge with SES.”
Benalla SES trains every Wednesday from 7:30pm at 1 Samaria Rd. If you are interested in exploring volunteering with SES, email benalla@ses.vic.gov.au
