Victorian Community Sport Minister Ros Spence announced that eight schools across northern Victoria would receive a significant boost through the state government’s Active Schools initiative.
To energise school communities and encourage a love for physical activity among students, each selected school will receive a grant of $30,000.
The recipients who will be taking Cathy Freeman-like strides in their physical education include Seymour College, Wilmot Rd Primary School Shepparton, Gowrie St Primary School Shepparton, Wunghnu Primary School, Mooroopna Park Primary School, Mooroopna North Primary School, Dookie Primary School and Nathalia Secondary College.
State Member for Northern Victoria Jaclyn Symes voiced her excitement for the local schools, noting how this would positively affect her district’s young people.
“Active Schools is making sure that our local students have access to healthy ways to improve their health and wellbeing and nurture a love for sport,” she said.
This initiative is part of a broader government commitment, which has seen over $20 million distributed to up to 500 schools in disadvantaged communities since its launch in 2020.
“We want kids to learn healthy habits at school,” Education Minister Ben Carroll said.
“This is a great program to help young people find an activity they love that helps them maintain an active and healthy lifestyle.”
Over the years, schools have used the grants to upskill PE teachers, purchase sports equipment, create outdoor learning spaces, upgrade playgrounds, install sensory play areas and implement bicycle education or dance programs.
Ms Spence congratulated the schools for their commitment to keeping young Victorians active and engaged in sports, expressing her anticipation in witnessing the talents of the state’s future sports stars.
