To acknowledge loss and grief, Benalla Health has, once again, partnered with Benalla Library to host its annual ‘Community Tree of Remembrance’ during December.
The Benalla Library is a quiet space which allows reflection.
Writing a special message on a card in memory of loved ones can support healing.
Placing your message on a tree is a way of acknowledging loved ones and including them in your Christmas preparations.
A second Tree of Remembrance will be at Benalla Health in the main reception area for clients to access.
Benalla Health’s palliative care loss and grief co-ordinator, April Bretheras, said the Tree of Remembrance cards have a positive message and can be a healing ritual.
“People can remember their loved one at Christmas, including pets, and have their special message hung on the trees with other decorations,” she said.
The tree and messages will stay on display until the end of December.
In honour of the memories contained in the messages, a ceremonial burning of the cards will then be conducted by Benalla Health’s palliative care team.
The ashes will be spread near the memorial Mary Treacy Fountain, where community members have a place to sit and reflect their lost or missing loved ones.
