Emma Hathaway said she saw the pony running across Lawson Dr when she was driving back to work after meeting up with one of her clients.
“A number of cars had slowed right down and I thought perhaps someone on a bike was ahead of them,” Ms Hathaway said.
“When I first saw the pony, I just felt genuine surprise. My first thought was ‘where did you come from?’”
Ms Hathaway said community members tried to round the pony up onto a vacant block of land, so it would not be injured on the road.
She said one gentleman who was there at the time managed to organise some rope and another woman bridled the pony.
“The pony actually didn’t seem too frightened or timid, just seemed like it was enjoying itself and playing a bit of a game with us,” she said.
Moama Police and a local ranger arrived at the scene to contain the situation.
Inspector Paul Huggett of the Murray River Police District said the ranger transported the pony back to the pound yard.
“Situations like this are generally dealt with by the council,” he said.
Ms Hathaway said this was a lesson to a pay attention to the road when you are driving.
“You never know what could come jumping out,” she laughed.
