On the following Saturday, they joined friends and family at the Chrismont Winery in Cheshunt.
“They made a fuss of us, which was lovely,” Nola said.
Nola said it seems like yesterday that the couple arrived at the church in Dandenong ready to tie the knot.
“It was the coldest day for many years, she said.
“My aunt had came down from Mansfield and had to drive through snow.”
The happy couple then set off to Canberra on their honeymoon, only to discover it was even colder there.
“We went back to Canberra for our 60th anniversary,” Nola said.
“That was a bit warmer.”
The couple were engaged for about 18 months before getting married, and the proposal happened on a day out in Melbourne.
“We were driving around Albert Park,” Nola said.
“He pulled the car up and asked.”
Nola said there was never any chance of her saying no.
When asked about her advice on a long, happy marriage the response was simple.
“Take the good with the bad and remember it’s for better or worse,” she said.
Congratulations from everyone at the Ensign.
