As we have now entered spring it’s an opportune time to focus on newness and critically evaluate the last four years.
Every eligible person comprising the Benalla and district community must ask themselves these questions:
- Am I satisfied with the role of each councillor for BenaIla Rural City?
- Do I feel that my needs and concerns have been met?
- Are concerns that I raised months or years ago still remain outstanding?
- Have I been listened to?
- Am I happy with the direction Benalla is heading?
- Do I find BenaIla and district an area that supports me and enhances my lifestyle?
- Has council provided effective consultation and transparency in projects?
I think that it is imperative for a forward-thinking community to identify the many community members who have time and talent to promote, and better, Benalla and district.
One of the cornerstones of a successful council is the provision of community services. These could be best summed up in the three Rs — Roads, Rates and Rubbish.
Many people have to walk on roads because there are no footpaths.
There are areas that have been developed with many residences, but still serviced by a dirt road.
Rates continue to rise but what services or benefits do we gain from our rates? What benefit do outlying areas receive apart from an annual grass mow?
Rubbish collection and recycling programs are an ongoing problem for some community members.
There are tourism proposals which need road and facility upgrades.
How does one promote tourism if the only means to get there is a dangerous dirt track?
When one examines the key role of a councillor, it is to represent the community who has elected them.
This requires an ability to identify what the community needs, to listen and then to act accordingly.
Is this happening?
I believe that a fundamental requirement of a councillor is to work with the community, to engage and enlighten the community, to act with integrity and transparency and also to bear a sense of accountability for decisions made.
It is a huge responsibility to work effectively with the Benalla and district community to ensure our myriad of concerns, needs and wants are met.
I seek your vote to allow me to be part of a vibrant group of councillors who have the common goal of making BenaIla and district great.
BenaIla has seen a decline in retail over the years, with a number of empty shops adorning the main street. It is imperative that council assist and rectify the decline of retailing in our main shopping precinct.
Let me assist you in redefining BenaIla and district.
