Luke Sayers — a Rochy boy for life now

Old friends: Carlton Football Club president, and Rochster born, Luke Sayers with his former neighbour Andrew Sharp. Sharp has remained a strong supporter of Rochester Football Netball Club and was a key contributor to this year’s auction items (see today’s back page).

Luke Sayers is the middle of three children, Kirsten the oldest and Helena the youngest. He came to Rochester as a two-year-old when his father Graham was appointed Rochester High School principal.

His mother, Coral, had previously taught at Rochester in 1960, after two years at Echuca. After spending time overseas and eventually marrying she returned to the town a decade later.

She maintains several close relationships in Rochester, including with Mary Knight, Marj Sharp, Lyn Wolfe and Heather Watson — who she recently attended a Rotary lunch with when she was representing her daughter, Kirsten.

Mrs Sayers recalled the family’s first day in Rochester when Luke fell down the steps as a two year old and cut himself — his parents forced to rush him to the doctor.

“We feel a lot of connection to the town,” she said, recalling neighbour Marj Sharp (who she still visits) and the activities of the Hopetoun St community.

“We had a very big backyard, the Sharp and Lucas children would came over a lot,” she said, explaining she had recently visited Jenny Lucas at Elmore and Peter Lucas during a visit earlier this year.

Luke Sayers is married to Cate and a father of four daughters, including Alexandra who was the inspiration of his involvement with The Inclusion Foundation, formerly e.motion21. It provides Australian-first, innovative dance and fitness programs for children and young adults with Down syndrome.

He worked with Price Waterhouse in Washington DC for a number of years and is a former CEO of PricewaterhouseCoopers Australia.

He is executive chairman of Sayers Group, a Melbourne-based investment and advisory company and joined the board of directors at the Carlton Football Club in 2012.

He became the 31st president of Carlton Football Club on August 17, 2021, just one round before the end of the 2021 season.

In 2019, Sayers was made a Member of the Order of Australia for his significant service to business, to people with a disability, and to the community.
