However, it can be easily overlooked with our busy lifestyles and work commitments, and knowing where to seek support with health concerns can be confusing.
Benalla Health offers a range of services aimed at helping young families and children within the community, to provide education, support and interventions to improve health and wellbeing.
The Antenatal and Early Pregnancy programs provide an opportunity for expecting parents and people wanting to fall pregnant to gain knowledge about what to expect throughout their pregnancy journey, as well as what they can do to improve their health and the health of their baby.
Both programs offer support from midwifery, education from a dietitian on nutrition pre- and post-conception, as well as physiotherapy advice to assist physical health during this time of change.
Supportive text messages are sent out to new breastfeeding parents to encourage them during what can be a difficult time for parents and babies.
They offer positive messages as well as links to evidence-based information online or services that can provide guidance if breastfeeding parents are struggling.
Another initiative offered by Benalla Health to support children and families is the partnership with Benalla kindergartens, to offer speech pathology screening to all four-year-old children who attend kindergarten in Benalla.
The screening is designed to identify children who may need support with delays in communication development, particularly with language and articulation difficulties.
Children are then offered intervention by a speech pathologist prior to them starting primary school the following year so they have every opportunity to thrive.
Paediatric services are offered by Benalla Health’s dietitians, who can support a range of nutrition concerns in children and adolescents.
These include fussy eating, failure to thrive, eating disorders and artificial nutrition support in children who are unable to have food.
Nutrition advice can also be given to families around healthy eating during the different life stages to optimise health for their child.
Likewise, physiotherapy is available for children, whether it be input for newborns, concerns with mobility development in children or injuries that require intervention and rehabilitation.
Pre and post-natal physiotherapy is also offered to birthing parents.
These are just a few of the ways Benalla Health can support Benalla families and children to improve health and wellbeing.
