Postponed because of COVID-19 restrictions the event marks 60 years of Minis being manufactured in Australia.
Roger Bektash is taking part and said the convoy would be travelling from Melbourne to Sydney, following the Old Hume Hwy 31 as it was in 1961.
“They will come through the centre of Benalla with a photo opportunity near the Botanic gardens around 11am,” Mr Bektash said.
“This month we commemorate the first production of the original Morris Mini Minor in Sydney.
“That was 60 years ago, plus one extra year for the COVID delay.”
The Mini was a revolutionary car for its time, being front-wheel drive, spacious on the inside and fuel efficient.
It was the best-selling small car in Australia for many years in the 1960s, and in 1966, Mini Coopers won the Bathurst 500mile race, filling the first nine places outright.
Much of the Old Hume Hwy 31 still exists after many towns were bypassed and the Hume Fwy M31 was completed.
Mr Bekash said there were good maps, photos and history of the Old Hume Hwy 31.
“In particular the 13km section of Old Hume Hwy 31 between Chiltern and Barnawartha has been preserved and the original ‘mile posts’ and road signs of the 1960s have been restored to create an historic atmosphere and popular tourist attraction,” he said.
“The North East Mini Owners Group (NEMOG) invites the public to welcome the Mini convoy as they come through the Benalla.”
NEMOG members meet for dinner at the Benalla Golf Club on the first Wednesday each month.
