A police spokesperson said these imitation firearms were being used illegally across Victoria.
“The water gel guns closely resemble firearms and discharge gel balls made of a hydrolysed polymer,” the spokesperson said.
“They are classified as an imitation firearm under the Control of Weapons Act.
“Persons found to be in possession of this type of water gel gun are in possession of a prohibited weapon.”

Also people who have a Firearms Prohibition Order or are considered Prohibited Persons with respect to firearms, face additional charges if found in possession of these water gel guns.
“Gel Blasters are easily mistaken as genuine firearms with respect to general appearance, size and weight. This has obvious implications when misused in unlawful activity.”
Victoria Police is aware that these items can be bought from other states or online, but ask the public to be aware that a zero-tolerance approach will apply in Victoria.
“On... July 1 we commenced a permanent national firearms amnesty,” the spokesperson said.

“This is an opportunity to hand in these items before you are found in possession, including any other unregistered firearm.
“If you have any items act now.
“Make an appointment to hand in to a licenced gun dealer or if a licensed gun dealer is not an option, make an alternate appointment at a police station.”
In Benalla, Robinson's Locksmith and Security Service on Bridge St is licenced to accept firearms as part of the amnesty. They ask that someone calls before surrendering a firearm to them on 5762 2241.
