A dangerous intersection that has caused tragedy and alarm for the community has been brought to the attention of the Victorian Government.

State Member for Northern Victoria Rikkie-Lee Tyrrell raised concerns about the ongoing safety issues at the intersection of Waaia-Bearii Rd and the Murray Valley Hwy in Yalca, which has troubled residents for many years and resulted in fatal accidents.

During a recent session in state parliament, she stressed the urgent need for improvements, directing her plea to Minister for Roads and Road Safety Melissa Horne.

“I was recently contacted by a constituent who tragically lost his son in a fatal collision at this intersection in February 2023,” Mrs Tyrrell said.

“He has been working tirelessly since this tragic accident to have this intersection upgraded and made safer for all road users but feels his pleas are not being heard.”

According to Mrs Tyrrell, the lack of adequate warning for motorists approaching the hazardous intersection from Waaia-Bearii Rd has contributed to its peril.

“Sadly, we have seen this intersection claim a young life, and his passing impacts his family, friends and the local community every day,” she said.

“I call on the minister to order a safety audit to be conducted on the Waaia-Bearii Rd and Murray Valley Hwy intersection in order to work on a plan to make it safer for all motorists.”
