If you woke up one night in June and thought ‘this must be the coldest night in more than a decade’, you would be right.

On Wednesday, June 19, Shepparton residents shivered through a -3.6℃ night, according to records taken by the Bureau of Meteorology at the Shepparton Airport.
It was the coldest June night since 2007 when temperatures hit an even lower -4℃.
Tatura SmartFarm recorded a -4.2℃ on that same night, and Echuca Aerodome dropped to -5℃.
Benalla was the warmest of the four locations, recording a -3.1℃ overnight.
On the flip side, the warmest night was on Saturday, June 29, when the mercury only dropped to 9.7℃.
The highest daytime temperature was 18.1℃ on Thursday, June 6, and the coolest daytime temperature was Friday, June 14, when it hit a high of 10.5℃.
In terms of rainfall, it was a dry June for Shepparton with a total rainfall of 27.6mm, with the historical average being 41.9mm.
There was a total of nine days of rain in June with the wettest day being Sunday, June 30, with a total rainfall of 11.2mm.
This was a stark difference to the same month last year, with June 2023 drenching Shepparton with a total of 118mm and 54.8mm falling on one day: Thursday, June 8.
This time last year also had warmer nights with the coldest night being a low of -1.5℃ on Tuesday, June 20, and Wednesday, June 21.
Looking around the region, Tatura had similar numbers, with the warmest day being Thursday, June 6 which had a top of 17.9℃ and the coldest day being Friday, June 14 at 10℃.
Tatura also had one more day of rain than Shepparton, with 10 days of rain for June, resulting in a total of 27.2mm of rainfall recorded at Tatura SmartFarm.
The wettest day in Tatura was Sunday, June 30, which had 11.8mm of rain.
Echuca had its warmest day late in the month, on Friday, June 28 with a top of 17.6℃ which led into the warmest night, hitting a low of 9.4℃ on Saturday, June 29.
The coldest night in Echuca was record-breaking, hitting -5℃ on Wednesday, June 19, the coldest night recorded at the Echuca Aerodome, with the previous record being -4.5℃ on June 19, 1998.
That then led into the coldest day, with Thursday, June 20 hitting a top of only 10.2℃.
Echuca had an overall wetter June with a total of 31.5mm; however, it rained three days less than Tatura, with seven days of rain.
The day with the most rain in one day was Friday, June 21, with a total of 8.8mm.
Moving east, Benalla’s June day with the most rainfall had almost double that, with Sunday, June 30 having 17.4mm.
From Benalla’s six days of rain, a total of 38.5mm fell at Benalla Airport in June.
Benalla had the warmest night and day fall on Friday, June 7 with the night temperature being 8.8℃ and the daytime being 19℃.
In terms of the month’s coldest temperatures, Benalla saw its coldest June night on Wednesday, June 19 along with the rest of the state, hitting -3.1℃.
The town’s coldest day was Thursday, June 13, reaching just over double digits at 10.2℃.
Lake Eildon was the wettest of the bunch, with a total of 46.2mm throughout June and eight days of rain.
The day that drenched the lake the most was Sunday, June 30 with 18.4mm.
Lake Eildon was also special in that its coldest night wasn’t June 19, actually being a day earlier, on Tuesday, June 18, with a low night-time temperature of -2.5℃.
That led into the coldest day, on Wednesday, June 19 with a top of 8℃.
On the opposite end, the warmest day was Friday, June 7 with a top of 17.8℃ and the warmest night on Wednesday, June 26 with a low of 8.3℃.
Heading north to Yarrawonga, the warmest day in June was on Thursday, June 6, hitting a warm 20℃.
The warmest night was Wednesday, June 12 with a night-time temperature of 8.8℃ and the coldest night being -2.3℃ on Wednesday, 19.
The coldest day in Yarrawonga was still in double-digit territory, hitting a high of 10.8℃ on Thursday, June 13.
Thinking about the coming months, the Bureau of Meteorology’s long-range forecast for July to September predicts that rainfall is likely to be within the typical seasonal range for Victoria.
It also shows below-average rainfall in isolated parts of the far south-eastern mainland during July.
However, it also predicts warmer than average days across southern Australia and warmer than average nights across Australia.
