The Sir Edward ‘Weary’ Dunlop Benalla Memorial Committee is disbanding following its recent restoration of the memorial in his name.
Former Benalla mayor and committee chairman Scott Upston visited Tomorrow Today recently with the committee's first president, Tom Heaney.
The pair donated the committee’s outstanding funds to Benalla’s community foundation to be used to continue scholarships for local students in the Rose City’s most famous son’s name.
The committee has, for many years, provided scholarships to the two secondary colleges in Benalla.
Committee member Barry O’Connor said in recent times the return on the funds invested had been insufficient to provide adequate funding to continue with the program.
“In order for the name Sir Edward ‘Weary’ Dunlop to continue to be associated with the ongoing funding to assist Benalla secondary school students, the committee has decided to donate its remaining funds to the Tomorrow Today foundation,” he said.
“This donation will assist in key areas of its programs, which will continue to provide opportunities for Benalla secondary school students to explore their desired learning paths.”
