Lights out for Shepparton businesses and traffic lights

Businesses are without power and traffic has been thrown into chaos in the Shepparton central business district.

The traffic lights on the intersection of High and Maude Sts have stopped working and businesses in the area are without electricity.

Shepparton police Constable Nelson Rouw said police were investigating after it is believed two people potentially turned off power to the area about 2pm on Wednesday, January 8.

It is thought they may have tampered with switches in a power unit, which has tripped power supply to shops in the area and the set of traffic lights, Constable Rouw said.

Police are on scene directing traffic at the intersection of High and Maude Sts and Powercor is on the scene to investigate the incident.

The approximate time that lights will be turned back on has not yet been determined.

One person has been taken into custody by police.
