Shepparton Crime Investigation Unit Detective Acting Sergeant Lance Wiltshire said a 32-year-old Shepparton man and a 32-year-old Shepparton woman were both charged after allegedly breaking into an unoccupied house.
Det Act Sgt Wiltshire alleged the pair tried to break into a gun safe they found in the house during a burglary.
At this stage police believe the alleged attempted theft of the firearms was opportunistic, Det Act Sgt Wiltshire said.
The pair have also been charged over an alleged series of burglaries, thefts and attempted thefts in the Shepparton, Kialla and Tatura areas between July 11 and 23.
They have both been charged with two counts of burglary, attempted theft, criminal damage, three counts of theft from a vehicle, four counts of theft, attempted theft from a vehicle and theft of a vehicle.
The man has also been charged with two counts of making threats to kill.
Det Act Wiltshire said these making threats to kill charges stemmed from an alleged incident in Shepparton on the weekend where the man allegedly threatened two people, who were known to him, during a dispute at a Bowe St address.
The woman has been bailed to appear in Shepparton Magistrates’ Court in November.
The man was expected to go before on out-of-hours bail hearing before a bail justice on Tuesday night.
