The Benalla Junior Football Club is urgently seeking new players to join its two under-14 teams for the upcoming season.
Children of all backgrounds, genders and abilities are welcome to come down and get involved, as the club looks to continue to grow its junior program on the back of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Competing in the Wangaratta and District Junior Football League, players can suit up for either the Bulldogs or the Giants as part of the Benalla program, and will experience everything that is great about country sport.
Benalla under-14 Giants team manager Melanie Hart explained the situation the club finally finds itself in as the season quickly approaches.
“It is quite strange but in that under-14 age group for some reason numbers are very low leading into the season,” Hart said.
“The under-14s Bulldogs and Giants teams we have got around 18 players on each side, while we are really chasing that 22 to 25 mark.
“So together we are looking for an extra 10 to 12 players to come on board and get involved with the club in the under-14s.
“We train every Monday and Wednesday at the Arundel St oval from 5pm to 6.30pm, so anybody is more than welcome to come down and give it a try — that includes girls who may not want to travel up to Wangaratta to play in the girls team up there.”
For people thinking about getting out and involved with junior football, Hart said there were a wide range of benefits associated with joining Benalla’s under-14 program.
“There are so many benefits with being involved in country sport,” she said.
“It gets kids really engrained in the community, helps them make new friends and gets them out trying something new.
“It doesn’t matter if they haven’t played before, it is all about getting involved and we want to help as many people as possible fall in love with the game of football.”
