Benalla squash players take on Hopman Cup on team north-east

The Hopman Cup is an annual squash tournament involving teams of eight players from different regions in country Victoria.

Held at the Melbourne Sports and Aquatic Centre, it is a great coming together of squash players from all over the state.

This year, 15 teams from 12 regions competed.

The tournament was started by Harry Hopman, of tennis fame, and this year celebrated its 50th anniversary.

Each team comprises a junior boy, a junior girl, three women and three men.

Although the team from the North-East didn't top the ladder, the matches were enjoyable and everyone had a lot of fun.

Benalla will host its first-ever tournament for juniors on June 16.

Anyone aged 19 and under can compete.

Many juniors who play on Sundays at Thomas St courts are eager to join. Visit the junior squad each Sunday at 4pm to learn more.
