Our U12 Blue team travelled to Yarrawonga to take on the Rams. Choosing to bat first, our young Bushies got off to a great start with Toby Smith (29no) and Tom Lambert (19no) top-scoring to help the team set a formidable target of 95.
The Blue team dug deep with their bowling attack, with Ted Clancy and Tom Lambert picking up two wickets each. Unfortunately the Rams had a few more runs in them and ended up winning by 13 runs.
Score:
U12 Blue: 5/95
Yarrawonga Rams: 5/108
U12 Green
The Green team hosted a different Yarrawonga team at home this week on a warm Friday night.
The Bushies were asked to bowl first and were able to knock over a couple of the Bulls early. Finlay Parker was dominant in the field, taking two catches — one off his bowling.
Heading in to bat, chasing 97 runs, the Green team got under way with Ryan Lindsay (14no) and Bentley Parker (19no) both chipping away at the total.
Jaxon Heatherhill came up with another 16 runs and although everyone gave their best efforts, the run chase came up just short.
Huge shout out to Caitlin Parker for helping train both some new Bushies and the opposition’s scorers on Friday night.
Lincoln Richardson received the ‘spot for ice-cream’ award for Green team this week.
Score:
U12 Green: 6/86
Yarrawonga Bulls: 9/97
U12 Red
Back to Arundel St on Saturday morning where the Red side took on Wang Magpies Black.
Winning the toss and electing to bowl, the Bushies got off to a great start, restricting the opening three Magpies batters to less than 10 runs each.
The team continued to dig deep even after a couple of the Magpies players started to find the runs but in the end, the tight bowling and excellent fielding helped keep the total to 83.
Knowing they had some work to do with the bat, Jack McKenzie (19) and Louis Horne (16no) created headaches early and Oli Ross (13no) added to the Magpies’ woes.
Izayah Williams (13no) rounded out a respectable batting team innings showcased by only losing two wickets .
Jack McKenzie was awarded the ‘spot for ice-cream’ player-of-the-match award.
Score:
U12 Red: 2/118
Wang Magpies Black: 4/83
U14 Red
Having to defend 137 from the week before was always going to be incredibly tough.
The young Bushies bowlers started their attack and were able to pick up the first wicket early with a caught and bowled by Harry Skelton.
A couple of the City Colts batters looked settled until Noah Cooney got the break we needed.
Harry Skelton kept things going with two quick wickets in a row and finished with four for the day.
Oli Smith was able to snag the big wicket of the City Colts opener who looked ready to blow the game apart.
The rest of his bowling was nice and tight to tie the opposition down during the middle overs.
Unfortunately, some sloppy fielding and five dropped catches made the game harder than it needed to be but in the end, the determination shown by the young Bushies won them the game.
Special mention to Jack Dermott for his wicket maiden over and general on-field chatter to keep the team up and about.
Score:
U14 Red: 10/137 (40)
City Colts: 9/117 (36.2)
U16
Last week the U16 Bushies team posted a season-high score of 263. Their job this week was to defend that total.
While some early wickets fell the Bushies were having trouble making a real impact. Xavier DeFazio, playing up as his team had the bye, entered the attack and made immediate impact.
His bowling was tight and consistent and he ended up with 4-3 off 3.2 overs.
These future stars learned some valuable lessons in this week’s game about setting the right field for different bowlers and keeping a positive attitude in the field for the full length of the game.
Score:
U16s: 8/263 (40)
Delatite: 10/106 (38.3)
U14 Girls
This weekend the girls travelled to Yarrawonga. With an overcast forecast and a bit of drizzle on the radar, the team was hoping the rain would hold off to get a game played.
Benalla lost the toss and was asked to bowl. Everyone bowled really well and took seven wickets in total. Isabelle Heatherill was sensational, taking 4-17 off three overs.
Each of the girls was able to face 17 balls each when it came time to bat and for some it was the first time batting. The training is starting to pay off; each week the players are showing amazing signs of improvement.
Next week the girls will be at home on Sunday at Arundel St — they would love your support if you can come and watch them.
Score:
Benalla Girls: 10/99
Yarrawonga Girls: 7/132

A-Reserve
A-Res was up and about coming off a win last week and ready to keep the winning streak alive. Electing to bowl first, the Bushrangers were causing havoc with the Rovers batters.
Brady Purcell got involved early and kept the field excited with a direct hit for a run-out to upset the middle order.
Youngsters Kai Dervish and Josh Hart were instrumental in the game, picking up three wickets each, Josh finishing with 3-1 off three overs.
Heading in to bat, the Bushies were confident and ready to attack. Simon Briggs (42) and Michael Honman (18) started strong, with Lucas Ham (22no) and Josh Hart (6no) locking in the result they were looking for.
Score:
Bushies: 3/103 (26)
Rovers: 10/85 (31.4)
B Grade
Heading out to our nearest neighbours, Greta, the B Grade side was looking to keep its season untarnished with another win.
Winning the toss and choosing to bowl, the Bushies gave Greta no room at the crease, with tight unrelenting bowling. Brendan Duncombe was the pick of the bunch, finishing his overs with 4-9.
With a target of 49 set by the Greta side, Bushies sent in Vishal Sharma and Brad Milligan to do the work. The runs were met and once Vishal went out the game was called, the Bushies needing only seven overs to get the job done.
Score:
Bushies: 1/53 (7)
Greta: 10/49 (20)
C Grade Blue
The Bushies father/son team met the Greta father/son team on a very hot Saturday afternoon at Arundel St.
Greta won the toss and asked the Bushies to bowl. Normally the youngsters show everyone how the game is played, but this time the dads got into the mix.
Steve Hart, Darren Skelton and Mark Osborne each took two wickets apiece, while Paul Montgomery and Xavier DeFazio got involved taking two catches each.
Greta set a target of 152 after the 36 overs and the DeFazio boys went in to bat first.
Xavier made a very handy 10 but Christian was reliving his glory days again with a cruisy 73 before retiring due to “feeling old”.
Harry Skelton picked up 24 runs and Josh Montgomery chimed in with another 15. Darren Skelton retired hurt after trying his best to smack one over the boundary, which didn’t quite come off as planned.
In the end, the Bushies got the job done in what ended up being a hard day at the office.
Score:
Bushies: 6/154 (35)
Greta White: 7/152 (36)
C Grade Red
Our Red team travelled to Beechworth to take on the ladder leaders and chose to bat after winning the toss.
Some noble efforts were made to get the runs on the board with Daniel Hooper (12), Trevor Byers (14no) and Paul Ivery (25) all making commendable contributions.
Benalla made 79 runs and took the ball hoping to pick up early wickets.
Paul Ivery got all three wickets that fell, ending with figures of 3/5 off three.
Unfortunately the bowlers couldn’t stem the flow of runs as they’d hoped, with Beechworth picking up the win.
Score:
Bushies: 10/79 (35.4)
Beechworth: 3/81 (18.2)
