The Tigers did just enough to claim a 4.9 (33) to 4.4 (28) win, with the ball camped inside Mulwala’s forward 50 for the final five minutes of the contest at Moama Recreation Reserve.
The win comes following the heartbreak of 2023, having gone undefeated throughout the regular season only to fall to Moama in the decider.
Early on, it looked like coach John Brunskill’s charges would have to resign themselves to another year of falling at the final hurdle, as Mulwala booted the only goal of the opening quarter, before extending the margin to 10 points at the main break, leading 3.1 (19) to 1.3 (9).
But having kicked 1.3 to half-time, Cobram roared into the lead against Mulwala with a dominant showing in the fabled premiership quarter.
The Tigers booted 3.2 for the term while keeping the Lions to a solitary point to take the lead, ahead 4.5 (29) to 3.2 (20) with just one quarter remaining.
Mulwala fired the only goal through in the final term, with Cobram peppering the goal face for the return of just four points, until the Lions found some momentum in the dying stages to lock the ball inside 50.
Despite the immense pressure, Cobram stood tall, the players defending with all their might to cling on to the five-point victory.
Cobram vice-captain Paulie Degei was named best-on-ground in the clash, performing a starring role in his side’s victory, while skipper Hunter Hardwidge was also influential, the only Tiger to kick multiple goals (two majors).
Brunskill was complimentary of Mulwala’s effort in his post-match address, also thanking the Murray league for the year and Moama Football Netball Club for hosting, before delivering a special message to his playing group.
“My boys, we’ve worked hard all year, even last year,” he said.
“We’ve been through a lot of ups and downs, and to put in an effort like this, I’m so proud.”
