Friday night at the Gardens was the setting for U12 Red vs Blue.
Red won the toss and chose to bowl first.
Caleb Hein and Toby Smith for the Blue team got things moving quickly and put on 12 runs each. Things were starting to look a little wobbly for the batting side but Ted Clancy (19 no), Lachie Osborne (11) and Tom Lambert (22 no) steadied the team and got the total into triple figures.
Jack McKenzie, Albert Briggs and Bill Bourke all picked up one wicket each for the Red side.
When the Red team went into bat, Jack McKenzie got things off to a great start with a handy 18 runs with Jimmy Humphrey (10) and Louis Horne (17 no) also assisting to chase down the tally.
Blue’s bowling attack was tight and they ended up with six individual wicket takers.
It was a great way to kick off the weekend’s games against the Gardens backdrop.
Score:
U12 Red: 6/89
U12 Blue: 5/111
U12 Green
Just a short drive up the road to Mansfield, the Green team took on Delatite on Saturday morning.
Delatite sent Green in to bat first and although they lost a couple of early wickets quite cheap, the co-captains, Bentley Parker and Sam Mount, combined with 20 no and 32 no respectively.
Jaxon Heatherill (18 no) was another main contributor.
The bowling attack from Green was relentless and youngster Max Hadj starred with 3/6 off two overs.
Score:
U12 Green: 4/128
Delatite: 7/55
U14 Blue
On day two against Yarrawonga Bulls, the U14 Blue team needed to defend 119 set the week before.
It looked like it was going to be a hard ask until young gun Xavier De Fazio entered the game.
De Fazio started with Yarrwonga’s opening batter, stopping his campaign at 25, and then proceeded to send four more Bulls back to the sheds without a run to their names.
Josh Montgomery, Alex Lambert, Hugh Ross and Henry Briggs all contributed with a wicket each, but it was all about De Fazio, who ended the game with 5-0 off two overs.
Score:
U14 Blue: 10/119
Yarra Bulls: 9/74 (31.3)
U14 Red
The Red team in their two-dayer were defending a total of 168.
Harry Skelton sent a clear message to the Ovens Valley bench after dismissing their opening batter for a duck and then their number three bat for six runs.
Tom Mount came into the attack and cleaned up two more Ovens Valley batters.
Jack Dermott’s fielding was impeccable during the game and didn’t let anything get past him on the ground or in the air. His catch was a definite highlight.
Score:
U14 Red: 9/168
Ovens Valley: 10/88 (32.5)
U16
The U16 team was again in a position of having to defend a very achievable target from last week. A Rovers opener started giving the young Bushies some headaches; meanwhile, Ryder Levy was busy cleaning up their number two and three.
Koby Ross dismissed the opener and the Rovers number four bat, who was also starting to find his groove. Koby ended up with three wickets for the game.
Ryder Levy (2-8), Will Keen (2-3) and Mitch Cooney (2-14) finished off the tail end of the batting line-up, with Josh Hart also taking one of his own.
In the end, the U16 team again managed to keep the cricket gods smiling and scrape through with the victory.
Score:
U16 Bushies: 9/109 (39.1)
Rovers: 10/103 (33.3)
Seniors
A-Reserve
After losing games by slim margins, the A-Reserve team was determined to come home with the chocolates this week against Delatite.
Losing the toss and getting sent in to bowl, the Bushies threw the ball to youngster Cooper Binion, who made quick work of Delatite’s opener with his first ball.
Delatite’s number two and three bat were harder to dismiss, but Kallum Croxford got involved in both wickets and after that the batting line-up fell away.
Five individual wicket takers for the game, with three run outs, including two for rocket arm Matthew Priest, put the Bushies in a good position to chase down the 165 runs set by Delatite.
James Carboon had a day out, posting 65 runs and setting up the Bushies for victory, with Kallum Croxford (16) and Dale Stratton (15) posting reasonable scores.
Jonty Priest got hold of a few and walked away with 56 runs to his name and the A-Reserve team got the much awaited win the players were hoping for.
Score:
Bushies: 8/191
Delatite: 7/165
B Grade
The Bushies’ B Grade team made the trek across the valley to Rutherglen and were asked to have a bowl.
Their bowling was tight and unrelenting, as the opening four batters for Rutherglen made five runs between them.
Steve Pickering, in his 50th game, was in everything, picking up a wicket, one catch and a run out. Bushies were looking good, having dismissed Rutherglen for 91.
When they came to bat, Brad Milligan tried to move things along and scored a handy 18 at the top order, and Craig Williams (17) kept the score ticking over, too.
Steve Pickering’s 50th didn’t all go as planned and he only faced two balls before getting bowled for the first of four ducks for the Bushies.
Mat Hadj top scored with 22 no to help the B Grade side win by two runs.
Score:
Bushies: 9/93 (35.1)
Rutherglen: 9/91 (30.4)
C Grade Red
After winning the toss and choosing to bat, Nick Jacobs (10) and David Priest (26) got the runs flowing for our Red C Grade team.
Flynn Weeks (12), Vaughan Carter (15), Bayleigh Dervish (28) and Jason Weeks (34 no) posted respectable totalsto give Gapsted a challenging chase. After the 36 overs, the Bushies had 144 on the board.
One of Gapsted’s opening batters gave our bowlers all sorts of headaches, managing to make 63 runs before finally being caught by Flynn Weeks off the bowling of Vaughan Carter.
The damage was done and a few other Gapsted batters settled in for comfortable scores, passing the Bushies total in less than 30 overs.
Nick Jacobs had a great day with ball in hand, picking up 2/37 off eight overs.
Score:
Bushies: 6/144 (36)
Gapsted: 3/153 (30)
C Grade Blue
Welcoming a new father/son combination into the team saw the De Fazios step up to the plate and open the batting together.
Christian and son Xavier looked comfortable together out on the pitch, even though Xave’s running between the wickets was a little quicker than his dad’s.
Christian (26) looked ready to take on the Greta boys hitting fours and a six very comfortably before being cruelly dismissed by the Greta spin attack.
Xave (3) followed shortly after, and Josh Hart (11) couldn’t really make an impact on the score either.
Andrew Ham left the pitch after stepping on his wicket, which bought U14s captain Harry Skelton into the mix, adding 14 more runs to the tally.
Jack Hart played some great shots and was well on his way to top scoring until his dad, Steve, came into bat.
With only one wicket in hand, all Steve had to do was get Jack on strike. Unfortunately, Steve walked away with the second duck of the game, leaving Jack stranded on 23 and top-scoring bragging rights to Christian De Fazio.
The Greta boys dug deep and two of their batters stayed strong to bring the game home. The Skelton father/son duo gave their number two and three bats nightmares getting dismissed cheaply, with Mark Osborne picking up two wickets of his own.
Score:
Bushies: 10/112 (34.1)
Greta Blue: 5/113 (27.1)
