The A-Res side has played in some tight games the past couple of weeks and this weekend’s game was no different.
Batting first, Dale Stratton got the runs ticking over with 28 and James Carboon added to the tally with 35. Lucas Ham put on a great display of 25no and Josh Heylbut made a much-needed 23.
Ovens Valley opener Geoffrey Zach put on a display and made 52 while the Bushies were able to keep the other bats to low scores.
Dylan Barber and Brad Milligan each took two wickets and James Ladd, wanting to make amends for his duck with the bat, bowled extremely well for 1/17 off his eight overs. Lucas Ham, still riding the high from the U16 victory, also took a wicket in the senior game.
Final score:
Bushies – 8/134
Ovens Valley – 8/145
B-grade
Looking for their third win in a row, the Bushrangers were feeling confident against the Rovers. The Bushies were asked to bowl first and James Dalton quickly dealt with the visitors’ opener with a magic caught and bowled with no score to the batter’s name. Dalton wasn’t done, and was able to pick up two more wickets for the day with figures of 3/9 off eight, including four maidens.
Jack Fullager got involved and took two wickets, including the Rovers’dangerous number three. Blake Spokes and Murray Parton both took one each and at the end of the 36 overs Rovers had 158 runs on their scorecard.
Coming off a great knock the week before, Simon Holmes couldn’t quite keep it going, getting dismissed early on. Jack Fullager (32), Mat Hadj (20) and Steve Pickering (25no) all batted smartly to chase down the target. But Craig Williams was the batter of the day, posting an impressive 64no to secure the win and the third straight for the B-Grade side.
Final score:
Bushies – 3/159 (21.1)
Rovers – 8/158 (36)
C-grade Red
Our Red team travelled to Moyhu to take on Greta Blue and was asked to have a bowl by the home team.
Wickets were hard to come by as runs kept coming, but both Vaughan Carter and his son, Hunter, picked up one wicket each.
Paul Ivery took three for the day and after the 30 overs, Greta had set a total of 144.
The Bushies started strong with Chris Lindsay (26) opening the batting and getting the score ticking over.
Bayleigh Dervish (16) and Hunter Carter (12) added to the tally but unfortunately it wasn’t enough to take the win.
Final score:
Bushies – 10/177 (28.2)
Greta Blue – 5/144 (30)
C-grade Blue
The much anticipated father-son team was able to play its first game of the season against Rutherglen on Saturday.
The Bushies had four father-son combinations and the young guns were ready to show their dads who the best cricketers were.
Having a bowl first up, the Bushies made short work of Rutherglen’s openers but their number three settled in to bat the game out, scoring 80 runs. Sam Hazell showed glimpses of his younger self, taking 2/29 off five, with Mark Osborne and Darren Skelton both taking one each. Youngster Jack Hart took his first senior grade wicket and his proud brother, Josh, was the first to congratulate him.
A score of 145 was the target and Sam Hazell continued on his brilliant best (61no). Josh Hart added 25 to the score, with Andrew Ham (18) and Jack Hart (22) both making outstanding contributions.
Sam Hazell was the hero of the day, retiring early so Steve Hart could come in and bat with his youngest, Jack. Smiles all round and possibly a few tears in the eyes of all the dads that got to play with their boys.
Final score:
Bushies – 5/147 (33)
Rutherglen – 5/145 (36)
Juniors
U16
The U16’s game was nothing short of a miracle. They were asked to bat first by the City Colts and the openers found runs hard to come by.
Mitchell Cooney was able to steady the ship putting on a solid 16 runs with Angus Richardson (11), helping to build the total.
Bryce Cooney (26no) was top scorer of the day and batted out until the end of the innings. A target for the Colts of only 79 to win was set.
The maturity of the team really shone through in this game and the experience in a lot of the players was on display. Josh Hart got the Bushies off to a good start with a run out and then picked up a wicket shortly after via a Lucas Ham stumping.
Mitchell Cooney claimed two wickets of his own off three overs.
With one over to go, the Colts only needed a few runs to win. The Bushies huddled together and chose to go for the win. With that, a last-minute decision to throw Lucas Ham the ball for the final over was made. With his one over, Lucas took two wickets for no runs and the Bushies won.
Final score:
U16 Bushies – 8/78
City Colts – 6/77
U14 Red
The Red U14s were itching to play after having their game called off last week due to rain and chose to bat to start the game.
Jack Dermott and Harry Skelton took the opening responsibilities this week and although Dermott only made the one run, he came off the ground smiling, just happy to be playing.
Boden Hazell unfortunately couldn’t add anything to the scorecard but Harry Skelton (32), Noah Anderson (32no) and Jack Hart (33no) all took their opportunities and posted the top scores of the day, helping their team to a total of 133.
Noah Cooney started his overs off strong with an early wicket and with the continued bowling pressure and tight fielding, the Bushies were able to slow the run rate down.
Showrik Das and Jack Dermott both added to the wicket tally, making for an all-round team effort.
Final score:
U14 Red – 7/133
Greta Blue – 3/78
U14 Blue
Having set the total of an impressive 192 for the Wang Magpies White side to chase down the week before, the Bushies U14 Blue team were determined to restrict the Magpies as much as possible.
Tyson Williams and Jakobi Williams both picked up two wickets off their four overs restricting runs and not allowing the Magpies to build partnerships. Captain Angus Hayes got involved with a wicket of his own and Henry Briggs will have to wait until his first ball of his first over next week to see if he can snag a hat-trick as he finished off the wickets at the end of play.
Final score:
U14 Blue – 8/192
Wang Magpies White – 7/70
U12 Blue
Looking for their third straight win, the Blue team hosted Wangaratta Magpies White side on Saturday morning and were sent in to bat by the visitors.
The Blue openers got the runs ticking over consistently and then Ted Clancy came in and decided to shake things up by belting 33 off 20, helping to give the Magpies a hefty target of 106 to chase down.
Ted Clancy was having a great time, taking one wicket, two catches and a run out.
Toby Smith finished with two for himself, with wickets also to Jack Crook, Ben Fitzgerald and Tom Lambert. In the end, Blue was far too strong for the Magpies, taking the win and making it three wins in a row.
Final score:
U12 Blue – 5/106
Wang Magpies White – 8/57
U12 Green and U12 Red
Two of our U12 teams met on Friday night at Arundel St, with both teams hungry for the win.
The Red team won the toss and sent Green in to bat first. Every player on the Green side put runs on the board to help reach a total of 72, losing only three wickets along the way.
Ryan Lindsay (10no) and Matthew White (13) were the top scorers for their side.
Hudson Pickering picked up the only bowlers’ wicket for Red, with the other two coming from run outs.
The Red team batted almost identically to Green with all players contributing to the score. Archer Pickering (11no) and Ollie Ross (9) were the top scorers for Red.
While the bowling was tight from Green, with Lincoln Richardson picking up two wickets, the Red team managed to sneak the win in by two runs.
Final score:
U12 Green – 3/72
U12 Red – 4/74
