That’s a question being asked by Telstra and the AFL, which have partnered to offer cash grants throughout regional and metro Victoria.
The Telstra Footy Country Grants stream opened for application on Monday, offering up to $20,000 in funding to assist clubs.
From expanding female programs to building volunteer networks, the grant aims to alleviate shortfalls in various focus areas that many grassroots football organisations in the country may stumble upon.
AFL executive general manager of game development Rob Auld said he was excited the program would make a difference to clubs nationally.
“It’s terrific we’re in a position now to start receiving submissions for Telstra Footy Country Grants so funding can be distributed to clubs, helping them to continue to make a positive impact in their communities,” Auld said.
“I’d like to thank Telstra for their ongoing commitment and investment in our game.
“This program is going to benefit hundreds of local clubs around Australia.”
Some big names are throwing their support behind the Telstra Footy Country Grants program.
AFL big hitters such as Patrick Cripps, who hails from a regional area and is also a Telstra ambassador, spoke about the importance of a leg-up at the game’s ground level.
“Growing up in a regional area, I know first-hand how important this kind of support is for local clubs, in particular, regional footy clubs,” Cripps said.
“It’s a program that will benefit the whole community as it’s not just about the players, it’s about propping up the hundreds of volunteers that spend their weekends dedicated to the club.
“The sense of belonging local clubs create is invaluable to the community and the dedication and passion of those running the club is what makes it so great.
“These grants will help make their life easier and provide funding to help grow the game too.”
The grant program’s advisory board, comprised of eight representatives, will meet up to four times a year to review applications, with the first pool of funding to be assigned at the end of March 2024.
