The Bears’ new A-grade coach Kim Borger has lined up a special coaching clinic later this month — but it won’t be at Deakin Reserve.
In fact, it will have virtually nothing to do with her native Goulburn Valley League club.
Borger will be heading up a one-time training session split into junior and senior components for Waaia Football Netball Club players on the evening of Thursday, January 23.
With pre-season kicking off at football and netball clubs nationwide in the coming days and weeks, it serves as a huge opportunity for the Picola District Football Netball League outfit to kick-start preparations for 2025.
The reigning Wellman Family medallist as the GVL’s best-and-fairest in 2024 is wasting no time bestowing her wealth of high-performing experience through this clinic at Numurkah Recreation Reserve.
“A lot of the clubs in the Shepparton area know I sometimes do clinics out there,” Borger said.
“I’m very vocal about giving back to regional communities. I was a country kid, so I know what it was like coming up and looking for opportunities in country sport.
“Someone at the club proposed a few dates and I was all for it. I spend a lot of time in that area now coaching the Bears anyway, so I guess I’m becoming familiar with it.
“I generally try and stick to clubs that aren’t within the GVL, as that feels like a bit of a conflict of interest, but I have a lot of support from the Bears in growing the game within our region.”
Though it may have come as something of a surprise seeing her name pop up alongside another club, she’s more than happy to share a thing or two she’s picked up along the way with the next generation.
Naturally her home club will duly receive the lion’s share as the year goes on.
“It’s good to get out there, do some clinics and get more people involved with all of it,” Borger said.
“It’s not only good to try and get more interest and people coming into the club, but it will give players a chance to step into coaching roles and see if they enjoy it.
“It’s a good opportunity for our girls to have a go at taking charge in that sense.”
