At the weekend, Michel put those words into practice as he took to Barwon Heads’ iconic 13th Beach golf course and produced a personal-best performance during the Victoria Open.
Playing four rounds across four days, Michel finished an impressive 11-under par while hitting 276 off the stick to finish in a tie for 15th place.
Michel’s weekend included two standout rounds, as he shot a scintillating 66 on Thursday before finishing with 69 in tough conditions on Sunday to move up 20 places in the standings.
More proof that Michel has what it takes to compete at PGA events, he said he was incredibly satisfied with his performance
“I was very happy with the way I played, I put four pretty solid rounds together which is something I have gotten a lot better at,” Michel said.
“The first couple of days the conditions were a bit easier and then it got more and more difficult as the weekend went on.
“I love playing the Victoria Open, it is my home open being a Victorian, so it was nice to firstly make the cut and then finish with a very good round on Sunday.”
While he showed flashes of brilliance across the first three days, it was on the final day that Michel proved he was among the best players on the course, with his 69 the second-best score of any player on the day.
He described his mindset heading into Sunday and what it was that made his game click.
“I spoke to my coach before the last round and said if I was able to get out early and get some of the nicer conditions I knew I’d be able to put up a good score and move up the standings,” he said.
“And it all kind of happened that way, I was lucky enough to play with a guy who got four under, so we just fed off each other pretty well and it was a nice move up the leaderboard.
“I’m not sure if it was anything specific that clicked, I think overall I am just playing well, I’ve played seven Vic Opens and this was just the second time I’ve made the cut, so I think that shows that my game is in a good place.
“Every tournament I play I just keep growing in confidence.”
Michel’s busy summer schedule continues this weekend as he travels north to compete at the TPS Sydney event at Bonnie Doon Golf Club.
He said he was excited to continue his hot form and get another opportunity competing for that elusive first win on the PGA Tour.
“My game is in good shape and I’m feeling confident in how I’m playing, so hopefully that translates to the course this weekend,” he said.
“I’ve played well in patches previously at this golf course, so I can’t see why I can’t put four good rounds together and be in contention for a win on the last day.
“Over the last couple of months I’ve had a taste of being close to the lead, so I just want to do that a lot more.”
