Hosted at Benalla Airfield from December 4 to 11, 2021, the state’s best will take to the air and vie for glory as the gliding season kicks off.
Beginning with a practice task on December 4, the first competition day will commence on December 5 and follow right on through until December 11.
A statement released by Gliding Club of Victoria detailed what to expect from the event.
“The pilots competing range from those who are new to competition and are looking for experience and those pilots who are seasoned competition pilots, making for an interesting event,” it read.
“This year the event will follow a modified version of the SkyRace Grand Prix format, so it will be fast and furious with the action starting at around 12pm when the gliders are launched into the sky by tow-planes.
“The task itself can take from two to four hours for the pilots to complete. Besides single-seat glider entries, there will also be pilots flying in two-seater gliders for those who want to have double the fun.”
Benalla Airfield, the home of the State Gliding Centre, has been chosen to host the event once more due to its suitability, with ideal soaring weather and fitting gliding terrain.
As the largest gliding club in the Southern Hemisphere, the Gliding Club of Victoria will welcome pilots from a talent pool of the 14 total active gliding clubs throughout the state.
It kicks off a blockbuster few months of gliding with the Australian Junior Nationals ‘Joeyglide’ (January 15 to 22), YesGirlsGlide Victorian Mini Series (January 27 to 30) and the 2021-22 Club/Sports Class Nationals (February 19 to 26) to follow.
This upcoming event is at all times predicated on COVID-19 restrictions, proof of COVID-19 vaccination status and advice from DHHS.
