Best is poised just 75 points behind series leader Declan Fraser as they enter the final round this week.
It is a position he is not unfamiliar with, having entered last year’s finale 129 points down, finishing second behind eventual champion Broc Feeney, who was promoted to Supercars this season.
Best’s team, Tickford Racing, will be eager to secure its first Super2 title since Garry Jacobson took the podium in 2016.
The Benalla speedster has won three of five rounds this year, but was forced to make up for lost points after he was taken out in Perth in round two.
Since then, he has slowly climbed his way up the leaderboard, securing a number of pole positions and getting points on the board along the way.
Recently, Best secured round honours at Bathurst after wet weather shortened the weekend.
“It’s been tough,” Best said of his season.
“I went from leading the championship to seventh and now I’m slowly climbing back up, hopefully by the end of Adelaide we can come out on top.“
Sealing a Super2 crown would nevertheless cap what has been a superb year for the 21 year old.
A record-breaking pole position as a wildcard entry at Tailem Bend back in August was a highlight on a list of achievements this season.
But he is eager to add the jewel in the crown at Adelaide this week.
“In a way, you’d still be happy with second rather than throw the whole thing away,” he said.
“Last race, all or nothing.”
The Adelaide 500 will start on Thursday afternoon with final races to be run on Sunday, December 4.
