The annual Sweat vs Steam will be returning on Sunday, October 6 with entries open for various race events.
Ten kilometre and and 5km runs are available, with juniors 6-12 able to take part in a 2km Junior River Run, and under-12s having the option of the 600m kids dash.
The unique aspect of Sweat vs Steam is that runners across all events will face off against one of Echuca’s historic paddle steamers, who will be racing runners to the finish line.
River conditions determine how fast the vessel can move on the water, so runners can’t be sure how long they have before the steamer sounds its arrival.
Each distance is staggered so that all competitors have an opportunity to take on the paddle steamer.
“Obviously, the big (drawcard) is that all participants are racing against the paddle steamer,” event director Sarah Mulkearns said, ahead of the 2023 event.
“So that in itself, and just the Echuca Port area, to be able to run through the Discovery Centre … is really unique for all the participants.”
Sweat vs Steam started in 1998 as a half-marathon event and has grown to into its current form, with almost 400 entrants taking part last year.
The event serves as a community fundraiser, with the proceeds going to community clubs, schools, and not-for-profits.
“Since its inception that was the whole premise of the event, so any funds that are raised from the event go back into the community,” Sarah said.
Last year’s event raised $15,000 which was distributed back into the community.
Sweat vs Sweat will be held on Sunday, October 6, with the 10km event starting at 8am from Hopwood Gardens, Echuca. To enter Sweat vs Steam, visit www.sweatvssteam.com.au
