The competition’s bottom three sides all scored upset wins in round 10, coming out of the holiday break firing and in good touch.
Rich River looked to be hitting its stride in the final round before the break, pushing then-undefeated Echuca to within three shots, and they continued that momentum this week, toppling second-placed Mathoura 12-56 to 4-53 at Mathoura Bowls Club.
Brian Trengove and company; Keith Rowan (lead), Elizabeth Easther (second), and Noeline King (third); put the team on their back, picking up a 20-9 win in their rink.
Mathoura skips Mick Humphreys and Peter Pangrazio got the job done in the other two rinks, but their margins weren’t strong enough to earn the overall result.
Elsewhere, Echuca started 2025 on a down note, suffering its first loss of the season, 14-68 to 2-62 at the hands of Deniliquin.
The trip to Deniliquin Bowling Club wasn’t a kind one for the formerly undefeated leader, Echuca suffering significant losses in two rinks.
Christine Taylor skipped her quartet to a 25-16 victory, while Stephen O’Brien also had a nine-shot win for Deniliquin, getting the better of Echuca counterpart Kerryn Evans 27-18.
Ian Page pulled back some points for Echuca, guiding his side to a 28-16 win in the remaining rink, but Deni proved too strong on overall shots.
The final match of the round was a mid-table clash between Rochester and Stanhope, Rochy getting a big boost to its finals hopes with victory over its fourth-placed rivals.
Rochy skips Brian Kinnane and Rob Dennis each scored five-shot wins, Kinnane getting up 24-19 and Dennis 19-14.
Jamie Stokes earned rink points for Stanhope in the final rink, but Rochy grabbed the valuable overall points, closing to within two competition points of fourth.
Moama had the bye in round 10.
Next week, Rich River will host Deniliquin, Mathoura will travel to Moama, and Echuca will face a visit from Stanhope, as Rochester has the bye.
