Brazil ex-president Bolsonaro's health worsens: doctors

The health of former Brazilian president Jair Bolsonaro has declined following abdominal surgery nearly two weeks ago, with elevated blood pressure and worsening liver enzymes, a report by doctors says.

The report said Bolsonaro, who underwent surgery in Brasília on April 13 for complications related to his small intestine, will undergo additional tests.

There is currently no indication of when he might be discharged.

Bolsonaro, 70, has been in intensive care since the surgery.

The politician has undergone multiple surgeries since surviving an assassination attempt during the 2018 election campaign, in which he was stabbed in the abdomen.

He is facing charges for allegedly plotting a coup against the government of his successor, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, following his election defeat in October 2022.

In March, the Supreme Court allowed the case against Bolsonaro and seven alleged co-conspirators to proceed.

If convicted, Bolsonaro could face several years in prison.

On Wednesday, a bailiff visited him in hospital to formally notify him of the proceedings before the Supreme Court.
